PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Greetings from sunny San Diego! I’m visiting family and friends on our annual pilgrimage to my California birthplace, something we like to call “family vacation”. It’s here that I always realize how lucky and blessed I am to have the life I do and so many people in it who love and support me. This year, spending time in California also makes me realize how lucky and blessed we Missourians are to live in a state that values court reporters, our professionalism, our product, and our skill.
Many states, including California, have been forced to take drastic measures to save court reporting jobs, while other states haven’t even fared that well. It’s this that made me really start thinking about the state of things, so to speak, and how thankful I am, and we should all be, to work and live in Missouri. It is not a small coincidence that this is a direct result of YOU, MCRA members, the best lobbyist we could ever ask for, and a hard-working MCRA board that we work in one of the BEST states at this time, rather than the opposite. Thank YOU for all your efforts this past year and putting your faith in our association and lobbyist, David Klarich, to do what is best for us all. It paid off.
Now is the time to continue the momentum for the upcoming legislative year and time to become pro-active. If you haven’t yet met or familiarized yourself with your representatives, this is the time to do so. I was never exposed to nor familiar with the legislative process or what matters to our lawmakers until two years ago. I thought, like so many others, that my sole voice or vote didn’t count for much. I was wrong. Our lawmakers care and listen to their constituents and, for lack of a better term, “work” for us, the folks they represent at the Capitol. While attending NCRA’s Legislative Boot Camp in Washington D.C., we learned lawmakers prefer a face-to-face meeting or anything on a personal level, such as personal letters and e-mails when a face-to-face meeting isn’t possible. The squeaky wheel, or court reporter, does indeed get the oil. Please visit http://www.senate.mo.gov/llookup/leg_lookup.aspx to locate your representatives and make friends with them on your home turf. The old adage “you can never have too many friends” is never more true than in these times of budget crisis.
We are honored and excited to have David Klarich join us for MCRA’s 65th convention in Clayton on Oct. 2. It will be a great opportunity for every member of MCRA to meet our lobbyist and hear what he has to say about the past Legislative year and, more importantly, what lies on the horizon in the upcoming session. Diana Taylor and Angie Culler will be presenting a Legislative Boot Camp for convention attendees, minus the camouflage and sore muscles. It’s invaluable training we can all apply to talking to our representatives and public speaking in general. I can say from personal experience, Boot Camp changed me for the better professionally and built confidence in many areas of my life. It will do that same for everyone in attendance.
This will be my last president’s message and I want to take this opportunity to say what an awesome year and experience this past year has been for me! I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It has gone by fast and I certainly couldn’t have done it without the backing of our board of directors and you, the membership. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am passing the torch on to Joanne Martin -- who has had the torch before! – with the confidence that we could not be in better hands than hers for the year ahead. She sets the gold standard in court reporting and board service.
I look forward to seeing and visiting with you all at convention October 1-2 in Clayton! You’ll find convention registration forms and seminar descriptions located herein, so sign up by August 31 and get discounted room block rates. Meet you in St. Louey for Alllll thaaaat Jazzzzzz!
Your friend and colleague,
Tiffany M. Thompson
